Bumpy Cake My All Time Favorite Birthday Treat

by beth on July 21, 2009

I was going to share a recipe, just as easy & tasty as My Hubby’s Homemade Pancakes or My Oven Baked Omelette, but then we had the above featured cake for my birthday. This is a Bumpy Cake. It is a fancier version of a simply scrumptious cake by Sanders. If you will meet someone who had the Sanders experience as a kid they will rave about it.

The hold Sanders has over those who come into contact with it is not easily explained. It’s the hold of childhood memories, like the taste of Grandma’s cookies, the smell of your Mother’s perfume, or the feel of warped cushion of your Father’s chair. You just feel comfort when you have it. Everyone in my family loves Sanders, they all (and by all, I mean the whole extended clan) tell tall tales of it’s wonder.

As a kid growing up we always got a Sanders Bumpy Cake in the summer.  With birthdays abounding Bumpy Cakes were eaten. In the hot heat of July you had to eat it fast before the chocolate started to melt, it was a delicious race against time.

Having one is a childhood memory for me that Hubby has tried to recreate every year. He is wonderful to do this for me because he doesn’t have the same attachment to Bumpy Cake the way I do. He is more into the Sanders hot fudge. For me though it’s the reminder of a family tradition that is comforting. But this year he was not able to get a Sander’s cake.

However, he was able to get a Bumpy Cake for me. This cake, I have pictured here, is from a local market. It was absolutely amazing. It was a decadent version of the Sanders Original. The inside had a thick layer of butter cream frosting & the top is a rich chocolate ganache. The chocolate cake was very moist & overall for as rich as the cake was it was not overpowering. I am enjoying the last piece as I write this.

Now I know I just raved about Sanders as transporting me back in time. And it’s true that this cake wasn’t the exact same as what I had as a kid but I realized that I’m creating new memories rooted in the past. Because Mr. J said “Mommy, we have one of these every year. It’s our tradition.”

For him it wasn’t Sanders that was important & I realized it wasn’t for me either (even though I DO love those cakes). But it was the family traditions and memories that were made around the table that mattered most. And then I got to explain to him why I always have a Bumpy Cake. Passing on memories from my childhood to my own children while making new ones around our table.  Maybe it won’t always be the exact same but it will be in spirit.
