The Great Pumpkins

by beth on November 4, 2009

Somehow Halloween has come & gone already.

It was D-man’s first Halloween.  He seemed mostly interested in the pumpkins, everything else did not impress him.  Granted we do a pretty tame Halloween, but still he barely batted an eye until he got near freshly carved Jack O’Lanterns.

My firstborn had to try to make his scarey & felt he needed hair it looks kinda like he drew a toupe on his guy.  And let’s be honest toupes can be downright frightening.

The other kids decided happy and au naturale was better.  And be real, au naturale puts a smile on lots of faces. Just remember that Halloween pin up & how wide her Jack O’Lantern was smiling.

Then D-man noticed them lined and up and made a beeline for them.

You can almost see him thinking, “Hmmm…what’s this? Can I eat it?” The kid tries to eat everything right now, except any actual food we offer him. It’s like some cosmic joke.

And then you see him realize that I’ve caught him on camera. He’s so busted, no sneaking a bite. I just love that “Who me??? I wasn’t doing anything.” look.

Overall, everyone had a great Halloween night. Low key & spent with family, building on our own little family traditions.   We went this year to the Detroit Zoo for a trick or treat walk. The zoo is cool at night, they decorate it with wonderful displays and lights.

One of the big hits with the kid’s was this Where the Wild Things Are display.  There’s King Max!

And there’s something mysterious about being out after dark, walking around while feeling the breeze & hearing the animals rustle. Plus, there is candy & some of it is CHOCOLATE!! I would walk through wild animals to get chocolate & really walking with ravenous kids who are excited to get candy on Halloween is kind of like that.

Too cute.
And an empathetic nod from me on the cruel cosmic joke of only eating non-edibles. When will this phase pass?
Chocolate is the giver of life.

Ugh, it is SOOOOO frustrating that he just stares at actual food or makes the balled up “I’m being tortured” face. But anything else is fair game to be eaten. You’d think with the 4th I’d have figured out how to work around that, but also no.

Pumpkins definitely have some stiff competition with him in the picture.

What’s funnier is that my oldest thought the hair did make it scarier. Because bad guys have bad hair :D

This is the second time I’ve read about going to the zoo for Halloween trick or treating. How fun does that sound?!! Love the investigation of the pumpkins! :>

It was a lot of fun. Changes it up a bit for the kids & is great for kids who aren’t comfortable going door to door or if you aren’t, also good in neighborhoods where trick-or-treating isn’t as big because there aren’t many kids.

I know and the firsts are just flying by. Thankfully with each kid still has many firsts, although I’m not looking forward to the first time one of them drives a car.

Thanks for stopping by, he is a “Who me?” kinda guy. I’m sure in trouble, because he knows it already.

We love Halloween in our house. The costumes, the pumpkins, the candy. (Oh, the candy.) lol I ate WAY too many fun size candy bars!

I always eat too many of those dang bars, they trick you into it with their fun-sized feel. But it’s much fun a few days later.

Those pumpkins are adorable! The zoo here had boo lights which I think is similar to what yours has. I didn’t get there this year though- maybe next time :)
