After Christmas (as in the very next day) we started “Project Organize” at our house. We went to IKEA, because we can’t resist the lure of IKEA, and the RIBBA Ledges came home with us. I wanted something so the kids could remove a book they wanted without the chaos of ALL the books ending up ALL over the floor. As was often the case with the more traditional book shelf. We needed something that made use of unused space & wouldn’t break the bank. These ledges do just that, originally they were designed for picture frames but I find they are perfect for making books accessible. You can even theme your books on different shelves & the ledges come in different lengths. We have varying lengths set up in the basement which is where this picture was taken. I took the picture a little off-center so you could see how the ledge looks without any books in it (see the left of the ledge–open space). We also plan to add some above each child’s bed, so they can have the books they like to read before bed right there. Overall, these have been a raging success.

I have two ledges I bought at at Ikea for MiniMac’s room. They are fantastic.
I am obsessed with Ikea… honestly, I can go to that store and spend all day there, and walk out with nothing (or, more likely, everything); but shopping there isn’t the point, it’s the mere experience sometimes, you know?
By the way, your previous post on your growing/leaking boob had me cracking up… I remember those days fondly! Sadly, they’re over and my chest is closer to my ankles these days.

That’s an awesome idea. I’ll have to borrow that one from you, when I can drill holes in walls again.
Great idea!! My IKEA is over an hour and a half south of me and of course, in a highly populated area (aka MAJOR traffic!), so I have yet to go…….can you believe it?! After hearing many a tale of spending sprees at the exhalted site, it might be a good thing too. :> Eventually, I’ll get there….in the meantime, I’ll just keep soaking up so many great ideas for their products from fun bloggers like you! :>
I have several of these waiting for the day I finally figure out where I wanted to place my pictures. They thank you for saving them from the dark corners of the storage room. Our kids night reading books are always on the floor. This is a brilliant suggestion. Thank you.
Before these shelves became popular we used white eavestrough in the basement for the same thing.
I love that! And I love the idea of project organize. I’m kind of an organization nut.
you know what, I need to do this and start organizing too.
This is a really good idea that I’m going to have to steal. I spend so much time picking up books and putting them back on the bookshelf.
Books are a problem to keep organized. It was easy before my little one was mobile and so active. She has a basket in her room for the books, but they never stay there for too long. The shelf is a good idea…it’s like a bookstore.
