Mother of Pearl Open the Book

by beth on February 23, 2010

in work & school

If you are a student, paying for a course, please for the love of all that is holy in this world open the book.  Open it at least once, even if just to look at the pictures.  The pictures are bright & colorful.  Even if your instructor is not.  You paid for the book, open it.

And as a side note: whatever you do, don’t tell your instructor that “I had a cool party to go to so that’s why I missed class” or anything else along these lines.  Instead read the book, go to class for lecture and prepare yourself. If you don’t show up because you’d rather party don’t tell your instructor because I hate to break it to you she or he does NOT care.   Unless they are invited to said party, keep it to yourself.   It will make everyone happier.

I don’t remember ever being that out to lunch. Are you teaching first years? It’s simple, you’re too young, you’re not wearing granny pants, so they view you as a friend. It’s your own fault, stop being such a “Cool” prof!

Worse part is that I have colleagues who are definitely in the older set who hear these comments. I would understand if it were just me, I still get stopped by some people when I go into departments wondering if I’m lost & need help finding my instructor.

I just had a few college flashbacks. Please excuse me while I twitch and shudder and have a small heart attack.

ha ha. seriously. kids these days. I went out. I went to class hungover. but i always did my work. and opened my book; i even announced in one of my favourite friday morning classes that (on the last day of class) that that may have been the first time I wasn’t hung-over.

Exactly you go out you do whatever you do as a college kid but you don’t tell the instructor. You just do it.

You know, this would have been really helpful about 10 years ago….

Just like me, 10 years too late & 10 dollars too short. Even though you didn’t mention money I figured 10 years ago you could have used it too.

stopping by to say thanks for helping make my SITS blog day so wonderful! you forgot to add:take the iPod out of your ears, stop texting in class!

Oh, the iPod isn’t even the 1/2 of it. Texting is the worst, I have a ban on it & cells in general. Students are practically convulsing at the end of class from not texting during the time we meet.

And I’m so glad you had a great SITs day! Congrats again:)

at least in high school (where I teach) I have the power to take their toys away from them, but it’s nearly impossible to watch them all and actually teach at the same time…

I’m always so surprised by these kinds of stories. It’s like how did you get into college if you’re that bright. Granted, why are they in college in the first place if they don’t want to do the work?

Yep, why are they there if they don’t want to work? I know it’s a challenge to balance all these things, but I have to wonder if the parents & society never expected them to, you know, DO ANYTHING EVER! It’s mindboggling to me.
