April 1997
My friend Reems came to school with me one day. She wanted to check out the campus and meet the people that her friends had gotten to know over the la st few months. She sat at lunch with me & the man of many colors.
While we were all sitting there talking he mentioned that he wanted to see the re-release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Reems being ever the matchmaker looks at me smiles, then looks straight at him and says “Beth wants to see that movie too, you should go together.”
He blushed and flashed a large smile.
I tried to not blush although I am pretty sure my face lit up like a Christmas display or fireworks on the Fourth of July. Subtly has never been my strong suit on embarrassment. I like to go all out.
Then he said “Well, I have been trying to ask you out for a while. So do you want to go?”
For a while???? What??? I don’t remember him asking. Then it dawned on me.
All the times he asked what I was doing over the weekend but in that casual way that makes it seem like small talk not asking for a date (so I thought). When he asked me to hang out just because. And eating lunch together ALL the time. You’d think I would have put it all together but I didn’t.
Instead I was oblivious to his attempts.
But I mean come on! He was just as awkward as I was through this all. Because really he could have said “Hey want to go out to see a movie together? You know like a DATE.” None of this cryptic “What are you doing over the weekend talk?” in a casual way. I NEED things spelled out for me because obviously if not I will not figure it out on my own. Maybe a billboard or flashcards could have been used, because it would have saved us a lot of time.
Regaining my composure & trying not to sound too eager. I said “Oh, well then, we should go.” And with that the stage was set for a real date the kind with a movie and dinner.

Men can be all thumbs about asking us out, can’t they? My husband was pretty straightforward but we worked together and he was 31. College men get a pass
That is awesome though! I hope you have fun.
yup, getting closer!

That is so sweet! I love awkward that works out in the end:)
Thoroughly enjoying the love story.
Keep them coming.

I’m loving this story. You both sound so sweet.
And I too had to be hit over the head with bricks to notice that “hey, that guy really likes you.”
Stopping by from SITS
Awkward can be pretty awesome sometimes. I like you. I’m gonna follow.
Sounds like the start of our courtship, except I was the one pursuing him and he was totally clueless!
Same darn thing with my husband and I. He was in one of my classes in college. We’re in Florida. Every freakin’ day he’d walk out of class with me and ask me if I knew where any good beaches were. Duh, yeah I know a few. I live in Florida, Dude! I’d just tell him yes and say nothing more. Because, I KNEW he wanted to ask me out, but I was making him suffer. Finally, it got too painful and I said, “Yes. Would you like me to take you to one of them.” And so now, of course, he tells everyone that I asked him out.
I have to stop reading. We have plans for the night, but I am LOVING your blog. Maybe just one more.
Heeheeehee…
You’re welcome
BUT… let’s be honest, it was going to happen regardless. I just pushed it a little bit…..hehe!
