Visit Ireland

by beth on March 17, 2010

Today is St. Patrick’s DaySt. Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland.

I feel a deep affinity to Ireland. Even though at this point I’m less than a fraction Irish, Irish blood still runs strong in my veins. My mother always celebrated St. Patrick’s day in our house.  We will do the same thing in my home today with an Irish-American feast, complete with my homemade Irish Soda Bread.  It is my mother’s father’s side is Irish. When I was young I thought the picture of President John F. Kennedy was of a family member, at 5 I remember learning that he was not. At least not that they knew of but he was Irish Catholic & that meant they had arrived.

While they may have felt like they arrived here in the States. I dream of one day visiting Ireland. A visit to Ireland is something I’ve always wanted to do. My husband, who doesn’t believe he has an ounce of Irish heritage, also has always thought Ireland would be a beautiful place to visit. All that history & beauty, the culture & the people, it just calls to us.

In honor of this St. Patrick’s Day. I thought I’d share some photos via Discover Ireland of Ireland’s beauty.

Can’t you just hear the call of country side?

Is there anywhere in the world you want to visit?

They say if you have even a drop of Irish blood running through your veins you will never want to leave this enchanting country.

I love Ireland. The sheep that surround your car as you drive down the twisting roadways, such an enchanting moment, although probably the natives don’t feel that way. The stunning castles everywhere you look. The pubs on every corner, not bars, mind you, but gathering places with roaring fireplaces, steaming bowls of soup and brown bread, live authentic Irish music, where the Irish converge to see their neighbors and friends and share a pint or two. And the people, those charming, charming people. I LOVE everything about this fair isle. Of course, I’m a little prejudiced since I am 100% Irish, both sets of grandparents good friends who came over on the boat to settle in the fair city of Chicago, but still . . . Erin Go Bragh! Happy St Patrick’s Day. Thanks for this beautiful post.

Italy is where I will go one day. My hubby will go with me. The pictures of Ireland are lovely. My father got to visit Italy in 1998 and I hope to go before 2018 when my passport expires. Worthy goal don’t cha think?

I would love to go to Ireland. Some friends went last year and fell head over heels in love with the country. I have too many places I want to go: India, South Africa, Spain, Australia. My husband and I are planning a trip to Paris this fall to celebrate our anniversary (that is this summer). We’ve been before (got engaged there) but are thrilled about going back.

I have a similar connection to Ireland- but the country I feel most of a “tug” from is definitely India!

I was in Ireland during Christmas and New Year 2010. The weather was terrible, but I was amazed at how green it still was there. Better for being in pubs than outdoors, but I loved it! I am hoping to go back in the spring or summer. I would love to do some hiking along the foothills in Connemara.

My husband and I are going to London and Edinburgh in less than a month. Not quite Ireland, but close.

I tried your soda bread and everybody LOVED it! I totally want to go to Ireland. Actually I would love to go all over Europe. If only I could just get out of this country for a little bit.

With a name like mine I have always felt it a duty to return back to the homeland.

My family’s been here in the states for enough generations that I don’t really know when we came over, but it certainly isn’t hard to find some O’Malleys over on that Emerald Isle.

I went there for the first time in my life in 2007, for a 3 week trip with my then-girlfriend all over the island. It culminated with a stay at a castle once occupied by the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley, on the north western shore, where I proposed to her on the castle grounds near a beautiful river.

Needless to say, Ireland will always hold many fond memories for us.

Great post, I hope you get there one day soon =)
