Roommate Wanted

by beth on March 22, 2010

Fall 1997

Miss Coley and I were looking at apartments with two other roommates that were supposed to be on board with us.  It was decided to go with an apartment run by the University, but it was expensive.   At the time I was working in retail making less than $8.00 hour as a manager working my butt off, going to school and trying to stay on top of bills.  So cost was important.

Thankfully there would be four of us moving in to split the costs and make it manageable.

Or so I thought.

Instead after the lease was signed the other 2 roommates, who were sisters, were not moving in due to personal reasons.  Their Dad freaked out about them moving out.  Anyway, now we had a signed lease that was too expensive for Miss Coley & I to pay for by ourselves.

And we were essentially SCREWED.

We were trying to find a roommate to share the costs.  But after asking around it seemed most of our friends weren’t ready to move out of their parent’s homes yet due to financial costs.  That left a pit in my stomach.  I  was already moved in & wasn’t moving back home.  It was a done deal that I was living on my own & I had to make this work.

Shortly after learning the new crisis situation of needing to find at least one new roommate I went out with Reems for lunch & did a few errands.  When I came back that evening I received a very big surprise.

A new roommate.

Apparently my Man of many Colors and Miss Coley talked about the roommate situation.  And somehow it was decided that it would be a good idea for HIM TO MOVE IN!

Yep, my boyfriend was moving in without me actually asking him.   He wanted to live closer to school, reduce his drive time in (he was driving a long distance) and figured it would solve all our problems.  He’d be closer to school & we’d have a roommate.

Plus, we were in love.  What could possibly go wrong?

Me, I freaked out.  I mean it did solve our roommate problem & there was no way I could have doubled my rent payment.  A 1/3 would be tough but workable. Plus, it would work out well for him and school.

But…Still…this couldn’t work out, could it?

I mean was he really “the one” and what if we do get married?

Wow. That’s a big step all at once! I would have freaked out too, but as long as you just say it’s for convenience and that’s all, there’s nothin to freak out about!

I have a feeling you stopped freakin out soon enough :o )

it’s odd how you forget about how tough things are when you are starting out until you hear these “college stories”.. OHH THE DAYS :)

I love that you are doing this such a cute idea.. and it will always be around for the kiddos :)

Well of course his room was waaaay down the hallway, and that could be the same as meeting a boyfriend on the same floor as your dorm room, or same hallway as your apartment. So many ways one can spin the web : )
