Expedit: Kids Clothes & Open Shelving

by beth on July 14, 2011

We are in the process of rearranging & reorganizing the kids room. In the boys’ room we needed a new dresser, Mr. G’s was Mike’s from childhood.  It was well loved, as it was used by Mike until after we were married & then by the kids.  However, it’s time had come & we needed to figure out to make the most of the space.  A space that will house 3 boys!  As D-man will move into the boys’ room making one room for boys & one for girls.  As we need to make our current space work in this nonexistent housing market!  Enter the idea to move to open shelving which will take versus having dressers take up two walls.  We will place Mr. J’s dresser into the girls’ room (it is still in good condition & for now this will work) & make even more use of closets.

We got the Expedit shelving from IKEA & it’s being divided up between the boys.  Socks, ties, & undies go in the  pull out baskets.  Other clothing is divided on shelves by item (e.g. pjs on one shelf) & each boy has a free shelf for random items they want to pile (they are pilers like their momma!).  The older boys have the larger shelving & D-man (toddler man) will have a smaller Expedit shelving unit at the foot of his bed for clothes.  The closet is organized with dress shirts, coats & out of season wear.

So far it’s going well. Oddly enough everything hasn’t been pulled off or made a total mess of (yet–fingers crossed it stays!).  I have also heard a lot less of the “I don’t have any clean ______” because they can SEE IT! We are still moving things around, figuring out what works best & have realized that we probably should have painted BEFORE putting the Expedit together & anchoring it but lesson learned.  As the kids rooms are both in need of a face-lift & a fresh coat of paint brightens any room. But oh well, we will make it work.

Brilliant!
I’m working on better organization over here in the new house in hopes that if I organize it well inj the beginning, I won’t have issues later on.
Fine, laugh all you want.
