Homemade Playdough Recipe

by beth on December 3, 2009

in home & garden

Somehow I got myself roped into making homemade playdough for my daughter’s preschool class. I’m not sure how it happened, except that I may have actually checked off every volunteer box on the form not realizing I’d, oh, you know, ACTUALLY have to volunteer & do something!! But really playdough is the easiest homemade craft project. And my arms did get a nice workout from stirring the ingredients in the pot & kneading the dough after.

What you need:

3 Cups Flour
1 1/2 Cups Salt
6 Teaspoons Cream of Tartar
3 Cups Water
3 Tablespoons of Canola or Corn Oil
Food Coloring of your choice!

Add everything into a big pot. First the dry ingredients and then the wet.

OK, now mix it all together after adding in your food coloring. Kids made the choice to add in red, which really looks more pink when all is said & done. The kids also got to do the mixing for this part, the next part was all me & the stove top. OK, then it goes to the stove. Cook it on low heat. Stir it OFTEN. It will start to clump up, look a little lumpy, & form into a ball. Once it is in a ball, you will then turn it in the pan until the sides of your ball are shiny.

It looks like this when you are done, you can place it on a cutting board or wax paper & knead it a little more. I told you it works the arms.

Alright, now play!!

Making an All Natural Kitchen Cleaner

Ingredients You need:

Baking Soda
Lemon Essential Oil
One Shaker

You will want to take ¾ full of a cup of baking soda. Put it into a bowl. Once it is there then mix the baking soda with 20–30 drops of Lemon Essential Oil. After you get it all mixed up you can fill up your shaker with the cleaner. To clean with it just shake cleaner onto the surface & wipe it clean with a sponge. If you get any baking soda residue then you can use a scented vinegar can be used to dissolve the residue.

Homemade Scented Vinegar Spray

White Vinegar
Lavender or Lemon Essential Oil
16 oz Spray Bottle

Fill the spray bottle with the white vinegar
Mix in 20–30 drops of Essential Oil of your choosing

Then you can just spray it on any surface that you have baking soda residue.

Enjoy! Especially since you can get the kids involved now & not worry about what they are cleaning with. Let them help, you can supervise ;)
